The Blackwater Heritage State Trail is the site of an abandoned railroad, formerly the Florida and Alabama Railroad. It was built in the early 1900s for the Bagdad Lumber and Land Company. In 1939, the lumber mill closed and the railroad was retired until World War II. It then became the route supplying Whiting Field Naval.

This trail is part of a 65-mile network crisscrossing Hitchcock Woods, a protected forest within the city of Aiken for over 50 years.
